Executive Director: Shai Franklin

WJC American Section

The American Section of the World Jewish Congress is an affiliate of the WJC in the United States of America. Its main focus is on facilitating American Jewish input into the WJC's global deliberations; encouraging American efforts to fight international anti-Semitism and promote tolerance; and reaching out to a new generation of Jewish leaders in the United States.

The American Section meets regularly in New York and Washington with officials responsible for US policy towards the United Nations (UN), the Organization of American States (OAS), and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) – each critical in generating a coordinated international response to anti-Semitism – in consultation with the State Department's Office of Holocaust Issues and other agencies.

The American Section coordinates its agenda with fellow organizations, and includes them in these consultations, whenever possible. Recent activities of the American Section include a special planning forum of 80 community leaders representing over 20 organizations with briefings by senior US and Israeli diplomats, and a parliamentary forum in Washington following up on the OSCE's most recent conference on anti-Semitism in Cordoba, Spain. In addition to the Cordoba meetings, the American Section has also participated in the 2005 OAS General Assembly.

As American Jewry faces a challenge of leadership and identity, the American Section of the WJC is playing its part in recruiting and inspiring a new generation of organizations and activists. Beyond including new faces and new ideas, opportunities and relationships are being developed so the American Section reflects the full range of themes, affinities, and generations. No organization by itself can bridge the gaps in American Jewish life, and the American Section draws inspiration from the global inclusiveness of the World Jewish Congress and from exciting initiatives within American Jewry.

Under the supervision of its Executive Committee, the American Section is also developing a series of proposed revisions to update its structure and expand membership.

Canadian Jewish Congress

Canadian Jewish Congress works to foster a Canada where Jews, as part of the multicultural fabric of this country, live in and contribute to an environment of opportunity and mutual respect.

CJC fulfils this mission through its mandate:

  • Proactive defense of the security, status and rights of the community;
  • Seeking the support of governments on a range of policy issues identified by Jewish Federations in Canada; and
  • Promotion of the values of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Canada and human rights at home and abroad.

CJC advocates on behalf of Canadian Jewry to advance these objectives and works in partnership with other Jewish communal organizations to improve the quality of life for all communities in Canada. The CJC national office is located in Ottawa, and works closely with CJC regional and affiliated offices across the country.

CJC works in cooperation with the Canadian Jewish Congress Charities Committee, which helps to foster a stronger Jewish community and Canadian society through charitable activities which support Jewish communal life. Its primary goals include creating opportunities for engagement with other faith and cultural communities; marginalization of attitudes that set the context for and education about the dangers of antisemitism and other forms of racism; supporting Holocaust education, commemoration and restitution; and maintaining a National Jewish Archive.
