In the capital Ankara, a man wielding a knife tried to enter Israel's embassy in Turkey on Wednesday morning, but was stopped by a guard before he could enter the building.
"A man approached the embassy with a knife and was shot by a local guard. Everyone on our side is safe," Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said.
He added: "The assailant was wounded in the foot. We don't know if he was attacking police officers or the embassy itself."
He added that the assailant had only reached the "outer perimeter" of the embassy, but said the incident was still being investigated. Turkish media reported two people had tried to enter the tightly guarded compund, with employees taking refuge in a shelter. Initial reports said at least one person was killed, but this was not confirmed.
Several embassies in Ankara were closed late last week amid reports of a possible militant attack. Turkey has been caught up in a series of deadly attacks in the past year, by the Islamic State terror group and also by Kurdish militants.
