World Jewish Congress (WJC) CEO Robert Singer today denounced the hate crime committed on Thursday afternoon at Jerusalem’s annual Gay Pride parade, where an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man was arrested for stabbing six participants.
“This heinous crime violated the most basic and central values that Jews – and people of all faiths – hold dearest,” said Singer. “The way in which individuals choose to express themselves should not make them targets. The rights of the LGBT community must be protected at all costs.”
The suspect in Thursday’s stabbing was identified as Yishai Schlissel, the same man who stabbed three people at the 2005 Jerusalem Gay Pride parade. Three weeks ago, Schlissel was released from a 12-year prison sentence for the previous attack.
“On behalf of the World Jewish Congress, I wish the victims a full and speedy recovery,” said Singer.
