NEW YORK - The World Jewish Congress (WJC) has praised the Kansas State Legislature for passing legislation that prohibits state entities from conducting business with those engaging in boycotts against Israel.
“The WJC, American Section deeply appreciates Kansas’ leadership in passing this bill and in promoting a continued strong relationship between the United States and its ally Israel,” said Rabbi Joel Meyers, Chair, WJC, American Section. “In doing so, Kansas has affirmed its opposition to attempts to isolate or undermine the Jewish state. When Israel’s right to exist is questioned, it is heartening to see its friends and allies rally behind it with full support. We look forward to Governor Sam Brownback’s signing this anti-boycott legislation into law."
The legislation will condition state contracts made with companies on verification that they are not engaged in a boycott against Israel. It will also prohibit the state from adopting policies that induce or require a person to boycott Israel or an individual or company doing business in Israel. The legislation was passed the Senate by a vote of 36-3 and few hours later passed the House by a vote of 99-13.
If the legislation is signed by the governor, Kansas will become the 20th state with laws against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
