Iran Must Be Stopped

Iran continues to make bold statements about increasing the number of centrifuges and accelerating uranium enrichment in direct violation of the sanctions of the United States and the UN Security Council. Several weeks ago, Iran released photos of its new generation of centrifuges that more rapidly spin natural uranium into the kind that is used for reactors or nuclear arms. These centrifuges, running twenty four hours a day at about the speed of sound, have now passed any limit that could possibly indicate that these are meant for generating electricity or any other peaceful purpose. Twice as fast as previous models, they could produce about four times the enrichment. This Iranian nuclear fuel cycle is meant to either provoke a retaliation or to prosecute the devastating threat that Ahmedinejad continually repeats—to attack Europe and the United States and to destroy Israel.

Together with its ally Syria, Iran is moving toward direct confrontation with the West over nuclear weapons. It has come to light, say scientists and analysts, that Iran has crossed an important threshold in weapons development by acquiring the ability to put a nuclear warhead on a missile. This joint missile program recently enabled Iran to give one billion dollars to Syria to buy new ground-to-air missile systems from Russia, circumventing the possibility that Russia might not sell these systems to Iran.

Expressing “alarm”, the IAEA indicated last week that they have evidence that Iran has crossed some critical thresholds. We do not know how far they are along with the enrichment, but the information is clear that they are moving speedily ahead with the weaponization program. The photos of a few weeks ago clearly showed that they seem to be working on new, very advanced equipment that can drastically shorten the amount of time needed to make a nuclear bomb. The reports by the international inspectors, who have tracked Iran’s efforts to develop the new centrifuges, also point to their success. This new equipment is partly made by the Iranians themselves, showing that they have achieved new levels of technical skill of which they are very proud, and which make the rest of the world very nervous.

Highlights

Why would Iran flaunt these pictures, rather than hide them while continuing to lie to the UN and everyone else? To frighten their immediate neighbors into submission. To show they can defy UN sanctions, passed three times. To stare down the United States and Europe, despite the punishment of Iran’s economy. To dare the West into war.

These days, we are hearing again about the military option still being on the table. We hear it from sources in the United States and in Israel. We hear Europe and the US talking about more and tougher sanctions and about major banks’ reluctance to deal with Iran. And a very worried Israel, only about a thousand miles away from Iran, is asking the United States for permission to connect directly to a global satellite system that detects missile launches anywhere in the world. Let us make no mistake, Iran must be stopped. There is no other option.
